There has been a lot in development for Toyota, and much of it is coming to fruition in 2024. There are new perks and packages for the majority of Toyota’s models—such as the new XSE Premium package for the Sienna minivan—and there are new special editions for each of Toyota’s three performance cars. Perhaps the most exciting additions, though, are three new models: the redesigned Tacoma, the brand-new Grand Highlander, and the revived Land Cruiser.
You’ll have to swing by a Toyota dealer to see these models in person, but until then, let’s explore the 2024 lineup and elucidate all the new features, packages, trims, editions, and models that Toyota is giving us. Before we do that, however, note that the following are the few in Toyota’s 2024 lineup that aren’t seeing changes: the Camry, Camry Hybrid, Prius, and Prius Prime sedans and the Venza and RAV4 Prime crossover SUVs.
Most of these are sedans, but that doesn’t mean Toyota’s commuter fleet went without attention this year. The Crown, for instance, has received new driver-assist features—Traffic Jam Assist, Lane Change Assist, and Front Cross Traffic Alert—which come standard on the Platinum trim and are available on the Limited. Meanwhile, the Corolla and Corolla Hatchback are getting Nightshade Editions.
Corollas Have Evolved
This is a welcome return for the gas-powered Corolla and its Hatchback kin, though it’s a first appearance for the Corolla Hybrid. In all cases, the Nightshade Edition bedecks the Corolla with bronze-finished 18-inch wheels and black badges and accents; the Hatchback also gets a two-toned Midnight Black Metallic roof.
The Corolla Cross Hybrid—the crossover SUV variant of the uber-popular Corolla—likewise receives the Nightshade Edition, which also comes with a roof rack, carpet floor mats, and black and red sport seating. This model’s SE and XSE trims now, too, have an upgraded wireless charging dock for compatible smartphones.
The performance-oriented GR Corolla now has a forged carbon fiber roof, a large rear spoiler, and black exterior accents, with enhancements to its duct and chassis. Cosmetic options now include the cerulean “Blue Flame” and white “Ice Cap” paint hues. This model’s Circuit Edition has made a brilliant return, with 1,600 units available; this special edition comes standard with the JBL Premium Audio system, black forged aluminum 18-inch wheels, and blue accent stitching for the shifting knob and interior upholstery.
Performance on Demand
The GR Corolla’s equally popular performance kin, the GR Supra, also gets a large rear spoiler (which is manually adjustable) as well as black side graphics, black brake calipers, and matte black 19-inch machine-finished wheels. This model is available with either an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission—both with paddle shifters—and its exclusive 45th Anniversary Edition can be had in orange “Mikan Blast” or white “Absolute Zero” hues, with 450 units available per coloration.
The incredibly sleek GR86—Toyota’s third performance vehicle—gets the all-new TRUENO Edition, with “Trueno” meaning “thunder” in Spanish. Only 860 of these models will be produced, with their rarity indicated by a placard on the driver’s side of the dashboard. Its drivetrain can come with an automatic or six-speed manual transmission, and the latter nets you the GR86 Active Safety suite to ensure your protection.
The TRUENO Edition can be had in either white “Halo” or red “Track bRed,” both of which come with a two-tone black hood and side panel graphic. Also in black are the duckbill spoiler, door handles, mirror caps, and machine-finished 18-inch wheels. “TRUENO” badges adorn the exterior siding, rear decklid, and front bumper lip. This model includes a Performance package with SACHS dampers and Brembo brakes, and the same Performance package will be made available as an upgrade to 2022 and 2023 GR Supra models that also feature 18-inch wheels.
A Minivan with Surprises
On the opposite side of the spectrum is the Sienna, Toyota’s flagship minivan, whose XSE trim now boasts a package that’ll let you get top-tier features on the more affordable of this model’s mid-tier trims. The all-new XSE Premium package comes with a 7.0-inch Multi-Information Display, a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a 12-speaker JBL Premium Audio system with a subwoofer and amplifier. The upholstery for your seven or eight seats becomes leather, which likewise wraps your steering wheel; this power-tilt and telescoping column now has memory settings, as does the driver’s seat and the side mirrors.
The driver’s seat becomes eight-way power-adjustable with power lumbar control, and both front seats gain internal heating elements and ventilation. On the central console between them is a Qi wireless charging dock for compatible smartphones. The side mirrors are heated, auto-dimming, power-folding, and come with puddle lights and blind spot warning indicators. The rear rows get their own comfort aids in the manual-draw sunshades.
Pickups With Even More Power
As for pickup trucks, the full-size Tundra gets a number of special available improvements. The aforementioned Nightshade accouterments can be added to the Limited trim with an eponymous package. There’s also an available three-inch suspension lift kit (for factory installation), the TRD Performance package, and the TRD Off-Road package, which is available on 4×4 models with the Platinum trim. The all-new—but highly exclusive—high-performance 1794 Limited Edition will only ship 1,500 units, so if you’re interested in intimidating exteriors and excellent off-road abilities, place your order soon.
The fully redesigned midsize Tacoma kicks off this nameplate’s fourth generation by reminding us what Toyota’s legendary quality looks like. There’s a lot to be said about this pickup, but—suffice it to say—it’s available in eight trims, two of which are new: the overlanding Trailhunter and the off-roading TRD PreRunner. The former includes bronze accents, an engine snorkel, and a suspension from ARB and Old Man Emu. The latter includes a locking rear differential, 17-inch all-terrain tires, and standard RWD; it’s only available with the XtraCab body and only the front seats, with its expanded rear reserved for cargo.
SUVs for Adventure and Functionality
After a period of forlorn longing, the Land Cruiser has returned. Toyota’s longest-running nameplate (in production since 1958) is a masterclass in off-roading, and it’s battle-tested in the unforgiving Australian Outback. This five-seater SUV now comes with a mighty hybrid powertrain and, of course, standard four-wheel drive. The front seats are heated and available with ventilation, and there’s an available cooler for the console, should you wish to take chilled beverages on your inevitable expeditions. Meanwhile, there’s a 2,400-watt power port for charging appliances and generators while you’re out in the rough.
The brand-new Grand Highlander is an expanded version of Toyota’s beloved three-row Highlander, bringing larger cargo space and a third engine option to a modern classic. This engine is actually the same that powers the Land Cruiser: the innovative 2.4L i-FORCE MAX Turbo I-4, which gets 362 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque as a hybrid. This engine is among the most powerful of Toyota’s dynamos, leading the path toward the brand’s remarkable lineup becoming carbon-neutral. This model comes with a total 97.5 cu.ft. of cargo space, 5,000 lbs of towing might, and available all-wheel drive.
Not wishing to overshadow the original Highlander, Toyota has given this leaner SUV its own upgrades. For one, the L trim has been discontinued, and the others have been given better standard features in return; an example of this is the hands-free power liftgate becoming standard on all trims but the base LE. This model’s Hybrid variant is also now available in the Nightshade outfit, with the LE or XLE trims able to choose between FWD or eAWD.
The full-size hybrid Sequoia is also available with the Nightshade package, though only on the Limited trim. Its Platinum trim can be upgraded with the popular TRD Off-Road package on 4×4 models. The midsize 4Runner doesn’t need further off-road upgrades—since it already has the best of the best available—but it does now have two new color options: the dark gray “Underground” and, exclusively for the TRD Pro trim, the rusty red “Terra.”
As for Toyota’s iconic compact beast, the RAV4, there are two new colors for its TRD Off-Road trim: the forest-reminiscent “Army Green” and two-tone “Army Green” with a white “Ice Edge” roof. (This is a fair trade for the two-tone “Lunar Rock” with “Ice Edge” roof, which is no longer available.) On the RAV4 Hybrid, its Woodland trim is no longer available with “Cavalry Blue,” but it gets a Rear Activity Mount standard—for light towing—and the available Cold Weather Package, which comes with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and rain-sensing windshield wipers with a de-icer function.
