2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Details

A silver 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander XLE is angled left.

The three-row crossover space is a growing segment that attracts SUV shoppers looking for a great vehicle that offers a spacious interior with multi-row seating but is still slightly smaller than traditional full-size SUVs. As the name implies, it's a model that fits between a midsize SUV and a full-size SUV. Toyota has elevated the three-row space with the all-new first-generation 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander, a large three-row crossover that can seat up to eight people. It competes against segment rivals such as the Kia Telluride, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, and Chevy Traverse.

The Grand Highlander is all-new for 2024. It shares the name of the popular Toyota Highlander, but the "Grand" prefix indicates that it provides a lot more than the standard Highlander, and that's true for a number of different reasons. First up, the Grand Highlander is larger than the standard Highlander, offering more cargo capacity and more room for its three-row seating capacity. It also features an updated infotainment suite and an all-new powertrain configuration compared to its smaller sibling. The Grand Highlander can also be packaged with a lot of available advanced technologies to improve its safety, navigation, and accessibility functionality.

The all-new Grand Highlander is available in seven different colors for its 2024 model year debut, including Storm Cloud, Wind Chill Pearl, Coastal Cream, Celestial Silver Metallic, Ruby Flare Pearl, Blueprint, and Midnight Black Metallic. Much like the standard Highlander, you can also get the all-new Grand Highlander in multiple trim formats. The trim lineup starts with the XLE, which is followed by the Limited, and is rounded off with the Platinum. It is time to dig deeper into the details of this enticing new Toyota SUV.

Performance

Three Eco-Friendly Powertrains

The 2024 Grand Highlander is available with three different powertrains that can be had in two different drivetrain configurations. There is a base 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that offers 265 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The base four-cylinder is available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive and offers an estimated fuel economy of 21 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway in front-wheel drive, or 21 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway in all-wheel drive. The 2.4-liter four-cylinder can also tow up to 5,000 lbs.

There is also a hybrid 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 245 hp. This engine is mated to an electronic continuously variable transmission and is also available in front-wheel or all-wheel drive. This gives you a lot of range out of the Grand Highlander when it comes to fuel economy, thanks to the hybrid electric motor featured as part of the powertrain configuration. It can achieve an estimated 37 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway in front-wheel drive or 36 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway in all-wheel drive. You can also achieve a max towing capacity of 3,500 lbs with the 2.5-liter hybrid.

The third powertrain, the 2.4-liter i-FORCE MAX, is a turbocharged hybrid that makes 362 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The i-FORCE MAX is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission, and unlike the other powertrains, it comes standard with all-wheel drive. However, you still have access to impressive fuel economy, with an estimated 26 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway, and you can tow up to 5,000 lbs. This makes the i-FORCE MAX a good all-around choice for those who want speed, towing, and moderate fuel economy all in one package.

Available Drive Modes

Each of the powertrains also works in conjunction with multiple drive modes available for the respective trims. The standard 2.4-liter engine features Drive Mode Select with Sport, Eco, Normal, and Snow Modes. Upgrading to the 2.5-liter hybrid replaces Snow Mode with EV Mode, while the all-wheel drive version of the hybrid adds Trail Mode. Finally, the i-FORCE MAX model comes with Multi-Terrain Select. This is in addition to Drive Mode Select and features Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, and Normal Modes, each one giving you a different set of stability and traction control modifiers to help you navigate through different types of terrain.

More Interior Space and Features

The Grand Highlander improves on the Highlander's design by providing more interior capacity. The extra length expands the total capacity across all three rows. This enables the three-row SUV to provide you with up to 20.6 cu.ft. of cargo volume behind the third row, up to 57.9 cu.ft. of cargo capacity behind the second row with the third row folded, and up to 95.5 cu.ft. of cargo volume with the second and third rows folded down. This gives you nearly 16% more cargo volume with the Grand Highlander compared to the standard Highlander.

The extra room doesn't come at the cost of functionality, though. Thanks to its versatile design, you still have many great features to use throughout the vehicle. This includes an adjustable power liftgate with jam protection so you can easily access the rear cargo spaces. Select trims also come with a height-adjustable foot-activated liftgate, so if your hands are occupied, you can still access the back of the Grand Highlander easily. The exterior continues to maintain a bold design just like the standard Highlander, including multiple wheel options and a full LED light array featuring LED headlights, fog lights, tail lights, and daytime running lights with on/off functionality.

You have an acoustic noise-reducing front windshield, privacy glass on the rear passenger windows, and rain-sensing windshield wipers with a variable rear wiper. Luxury elements are also present in the form of the available power tilt and slide panoramic roof with power sunshade, while functional roof rails come standard so that you can outfit the Grand Highlander with cargo carriers or roof accessories. This makes it a viable and versatile large SUV for daily driving, vacations, or taking trips where towing or carrying lots of cargo is part of your weekend warrior activities.

Convenience

Making Your Life Easier

Part of the Grand Highlander's appeal to SUV shoppers comes from its many convenience features. From its multiple storage compartments, 13 cupholders, and ergonomic armrests to its power windows with auto up/down and seven USB-C ports sprinkled throughout the cabin, there are a lot of ways in which the Grand Highlander makes the interior welcoming, comfortable, and highly functional. Two 120-volt outlets are available, one in the center console and another in the rear cargo area, with a shared output of up to 1,500 watts, so you can charge or utilize electronic devices while on the go. Plus, you have a soft-touch roll-top center console so you can keep your belongings within arm's reach or store sensitive belongings for safekeeping.

Ambient interior lighting and LED rear hatch cargo illumination are available on select trims, while features like the auto-dimming rearview mirror with a Homelink garage door opener come standard across the entire trim lineup. The seating arrangements see standard SofTex material and power front seats on the starter trims, but if luxury is your end goal for a three-row SUV, you can look to upgrade to leather-trimmed upholstery with Ultrasuede front and second-row seats, including power front seats with lumbar support, and driver memory functionality. You also have available heated and ventilated front seats and a Smart Key System on all four doors for easy access to the vehicle.

Robust Infotainment and Safety Technology

There is a robust technology suite, with a seven-inch multi-information display for the starter trims and a 12.3-inch digital driver display with customization support on the upper-end trims. Every trim also comes standard with a 12.3-inch HD touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, as well as Bluetooth streaming and wireless charging. An available driver-side head-up display helps keep your eyes on the road, while features like Safety Connect, Remote Connect, and Drive Connect provide cloud-based navigation via Google, remote connectivity to your vehicle, and emergency assistance on demand.

Standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 features a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Proactive Driving Assist, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and more. All of these features are built into Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, and all come standard across the entire trim lineup. Plus, you have available advanced safety features like Traffic Jam Assist to help you navigate through bumper-to-bumper traffic with driver-guided aids and automated assists to reduce the stress of stop-and-go traffic. This makes the Grand Highlander perfect for long commutes or busy urban driving and safe for the whole family.
